Wasara Paper Tableware

Sometimes the best discoveries are the ones perchance… I have no idea where I found this one in particular, but isn’t showing and sharing things with other people, the reason why we all write blogs so passionately? I believe so. What you see above is Wasara, a Japanese company that produces paper tableware.

Overly delicate, sinuous and elegant, this range of ephemeral plates and bowls flows gracefully over the table: the nature of paper tableware is in itself a one time only, however Wasara creates these collection using bamboo and sugarcane waste (bagasse), making their collection completely environmentally-friendly. As they say, “Earth to Earth”…

I couldn’t find a retailer in Australia, but there is a New Zealand distributor, named Epicure Trading… maybe they can help!

Silenzio Stampa

Normally I use English titles for my posts but today there is something I want to show you, something very dear to me. Silenzio Stampa can be translated in English with “News Blackout”, although it has nothing to do with the real news and the media world, not strictly speaking at least…

Tear, crush, toss and then… stop. In our twisted and turning daily life, where everything happens so fast, where news are older after only few seconds, Silenzio Stampa grasp pieces of information and grant them eternal life. How? Creating jewels made of moments, made of facts. Each piece is unique, unrepeatable, crystallising instants of lives. Stories protected in wax, heat resistant, waterproof although ready, one day, to be released and unfold intact the same news they captured in the first place.

Why is this so special to me? Because an old friend is behind this fabulous project. Her name is Alice, beautiful, smart, creative, she found a way to recycle news and create truly wonderful objects. A way to capture our world, our lives, and immortalise them forever.

Siba Sahabi

What if I told you that the items you see above are made out of paper? and not some sort of compound extremely hard to find, but from simple cutting, rolling and gluing paper forms 3 dimensional objects, beautiful ones I must say.

“My aim is to translate culture into objects; i want to build a bridge between the Orient and the Occident. I want to emphasise the ongoing importance of the melting pot. “

This is the vision of the artist behind these great creations, her name is Siba Sahabi (daughter of a German mother and an Iranian father) lives in Amsterdam and design various paper objects all inspired by the European and Middle East culture. My favourites are Bucchero and Homer’s Inspiration, a series of extraordinary paper vessels inspired by characteristics black Etruscan ceramics who used to fire their pottery in an atmosphere charged with carbon monoxide instead of oxygen, a well known technique called “reducing firing” used by Eastern culture to produce objects with a shiny and metallic look. Each item is hand crafted by dark wallpaper resistant light, so it won’t fade through time.

Have a look at the entire range on Siba’s website, simply divine!

Amelie and Mimou

After weeks of craziness I am finally going back to my normal routine… reading blogs and magazine is one of them, and considering my google reader is exploding of news I haven’t had the time to ready, a slightly different approach was needed. Instead of going through each news, I started looking at the blogs I know would never disappoint me. Decor8 is one of them!

To me, the highlight of the last few weeks was Mimou working with Amelie Hegardt. One step at the time: Mimou is a Swedish company, they make beautiful bedlinen, cushions, wallpaper and accessories. For the latest 2010/2011 collection, they worked together with the talented Amelie, well known for her bleeding ink and splashes of water colour. The result is simply breathtaking.

What I particularly adore in their latest collection is the love transpiring from every single picture, and that is probably why I would buy their products. Doesn’t make you feel better when you know, or feel, that behind something you like or want there is a lot more than just industrial and mechanic work? Like someone really cares about it, devotes time, effort and passion to create something special… To me, it makes a huge difference and I truly hope I’m not alone!

African Safari… on a cushion!

I believe that most of our creativity and inspiration come by watching, observing and understanding what is around us. Not everyone can, not everyone is able to convey a message into what has created.

Heather Moore is the exquisite designer behind Skinny LaMinx, the lovely creations you see here. She lives in Cape Town and maybe you can see, as well I do, how much the surrounding environment and wildlife seem to have influenced her work with little pieces of Africa trying to escape each cushion, tea towel, armchair and fabric.

Their simplicity is what makes them special, likeable and easy to imagine in every room. The full collection is available on Etsy, and from Etsy it can get wherever you are.
